Abecedarium

Illustration & Creative Direction

2016

Abecedarium is a playful, minimalist alphabet project built around a custom-designed typeface created to make reading easy and enjoyable for children. The project pairs the font with 26 hand-drawn illustrations, from A to Z, each representing a fruit or vegetable and accompanied by a short, ironic four-line rhyme. The illustrations and rhymes come together in an A1 poster designed for children’s rooms as well as for adults with a sense of humour and a love for hand-crafted illustration. The visual system was also extended into repeat patterns suitable for wallpaper and textile applications, with the project envisioned as the foundation for a future children’s book.

I developed the project independently from start to finish, including type design, illustration, writing, and layout. Alongside the digital work, I experimented with screen printing, treating Abecedarium as both a design and making-led project that allowed for exploration across typography, illustration, print, and pattern design.
